HANDS
In 2013 I decided it was time to leave LA where I had been living for 3 years. While I had made some of the best friends I've ever had, the city and I did not mesh. LA and I were not friends. That being said, it was beyond painful leaving my friends. I wanted to somehow document these people who had become my co-conspirators, my safety net, my chosen family. Knowing that not everyone would be pleased to sit for a standard face portrait, I decided on their hands instead.
Hands. Their lines, prints, different shapes and sizes, are just as unique as the individual they belong to. Asking to see the palms of someone's hands can show you more than you might realize about that person. I found that the pose of palms offered up seemed to reflect a position of giving that perfectly reflected friendship.
I fell in love with the project and didn't stop when I left LA. Slowly I have been trying to capture all of my friends, from all different parts of my life. Below you will find my friends in chronological order, captioned with their first name and the year we became friends.
